Limestone block wall calculator
For natural limestone, manufactured and concrete block walls. Enter the wall length and height and pick a block.
Face used: 2' tall x 4' long.
Include the buried first row in the height. Several walls? Run each one and add them up.
How to measure
Measure the wall length along the face, in feet. For height, measure from the bottom of the first (buried) row to the top of the wall. Curved walls: measure along the curve.
See all block sizes and prices on the limestone blocks page and the retaining wall blocks page.
Common questions
How many limestone blocks do I need for a retaining wall?
Divide the wall length by the block length for blocks per row, and the wall height by the block height for the number of rows. Multiply the two and add about 5% for cuts and breakage. A 20 ft long, 4 ft tall wall in 2x2x4 blocks takes 5 blocks per row x 2 rows = 10 blocks, plus 1 spare.
What size limestone blocks should I use?
Larger blocks (2 ft tall) build tall walls faster with fewer joints. 1 ft tall blocks are easier to handle and good for seat walls, borders and short walls.
Do I need a base for a block wall?
Yes. Most block walls sit on a compacted gravel base, with the first row partly buried. Walls over about 4 ft tall, or holding back a slope, should be checked by an engineer or wall contractor.
Do you sell steps and caps?
Yes. Limestone steps and manufactured block caps are on our price list. Add them on the estimator.
