Flagstone calculator

Enter your patio or walkway size and pick a flagstone. You'll see how many tons and pallets to order and the estimated material cost.

Area shape

Odd shape? Break it into rectangles, add up the square feet and use "I know the square feet".

How to measure

Measure the length and width of the area in feet and multiply them for square feet. For a round patio, measure across the widest point (the diameter). For L-shapes or curves, split the area into rectangles and add them up.

Common questions

How much flagstone do I need for a patio?

Multiply the patio length by its width to get square feet, then divide by how many square feet a ton covers for your thickness. Add about 10% for cutting and fitting. A 12 x 16 ft patio (192 sq ft) in 1.75"-2.25" flagstone needs about 3 tons.

How many square feet does a ton of flagstone cover?

Roughly 150-200 sq ft for .5"-1" stone, 100-120 sq ft for 1"-1.5", 70-90 sq ft for 1.75"-2.25", 60-70 sq ft for 2.5" and 35-45 sq ft for 3"-5" builders. Thinner stone covers more area per ton. Tight joints use more stone than wide joints.

How much does a pallet of flagstone weigh?

A pallet of flagstone is usually about 2 tons. Your exact pallet count is confirmed when we quote freight.

Which flagstone thickness should I use?

Thin stone (.5"-1.5") is best set in mortar on a concrete slab. 1.75"-2.25" and thicker stone can be dry-laid on a compacted gravel and sand base, which is common for patios and walkways.
